The Convention on International Trade in Endangered of Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) lists a range of endangered animals that are threatened by illegal poaching and trade in ivory. All trade in ivory is heavily restricted worldwide and in some cases banned entirely. Historically netsuke and okimono have been made in various materials, most notably in wood and ivory. Our website and journal will sometimes feature photographs of antique and pre-convention works in ivory as they form part of the history of this art form. We do not condone in any way or form the illegal trade in modern ivory.
