David Louis Brown has recently informed us of his decision to stand down from the European Chapter’s Committee. We were very sorry to receive this news. David has been a member of the Committee since March 2006 – 18 years which have gone by very quickly.
During that time David has contributed significantly to the work of the Chapter; he has, for example, organised events for us, including some very enjoyable visits to the Holborn Museum, Bath, and Victoria and Albert Museum, London, where we were able to see, and handle, netsuke seldom seen by the public. David has also acted as the Chapter’s “archivist”, looking after our growing back catalogue of Euronetsuke magazines.
David’s knowledge of netsuke is profound to the extent that some years ago he assisted the curator of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, in identifying and cataloguing their large collection of netsuke. Following this, the Museum then held an exhibition of some of their pieces.
David has always actively participated in discussions at Committee meetings and offered insightful and thoughtful suggestions to help us in our work; we will miss David at our meetings. I should like to take this opportunity of thanking him, on behalf of all members, for his support and work for the Chapter over many years.
